Five days from Cooktown to Cairns on Kuku Nyungkul and Kuku Yalanji Country, guided by Mooks; rock art, rainforest, the Bloomfield Track, and four days in the company of the man whose Country it is.

The tour begins with an afternoon flight north from Cairns to Cooktown and a drive south into the ranges to Rossville Retreat, a 300-acre property on Kuku Nyungkul Country above the Annan River. Three nights are spent there. From Rossville, the route runs inland and west to Laura and the sandstone escarpment of Quinkan Country; south through the headwaters of the Bloomfield River to Buru, also known as China Camp, and the falls on Roaring Meg Creek; and then down to the coast at Wujal Wujal and along the Bloomfield Track through Cowie Beach to Cape Tribulation, where the final night is spent. The last morning crosses the Daintree River by ferry and follows the coast south to Cairns. Transport throughout is an air-conditioned four-wheel drive.

The tour is built around one man’s Country and his willingness to share it with others. Mooks is a Kuku Nyungkul elder, a traditional healer and the Traditional Owner at Rossville, and he is with the group for four of the five days. He opens with a Welcome to Country in Kuku Nyungkul language and a smoking ceremony, then walks the group through bush tucker and bush medicine plants — what they are, what they treat and how they are prepared. The full day that follows carries the freshwater and saltwater turtle Dreaming story across the landscape it belongs to, stops at Old Laura Homestead where Mooks was born, and finishes at a rock art gallery on his mother’s Country in the Quinkan escarpment. At Buru, the group is handed to CJ, the Traditional Owner there, for a day on his homeland.

Itinerary

Day 1

Cooktown, the Annan River and Welcome to Country

Take a 45-minute flight from Cairns up the coast over the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree, landing at Cooktown Airport in the early afternoon. Then, drive south from there, climbing into the ranges above the Annan River to Rossville Retreat, 300 acres of Kuku Nyungkul Country and the base for the next three nights.

Mooks opens with a Welcome to Country in Kuku Nyungkul language and a smoking ceremony to cleanse and ground the group before their time on Country. Then a bush tucker and bush medicine walk: the native plants, what they are used for in food, in healing and in daily life, from a healer who still uses them. The afternoon moves into storytelling (the history of the land, its ancestors, and what holds Kuku Nyungkul identity together) and closes with a ceremony.

Dinner is at the Lion’s Den Hotel, a corrugated-iron pub at Helenvale established in 1875 by Jack Ross and named after a tin mine on the tableland above it. Miners once wrote their tabs on the walls, and the signatures are still there. It stayed in one family for nearly ninety years and turned 150 last year.
