Duration

11 Days

Group Size

7 People

Activity Level

Moderate

An 11-day birding and wildlife journey through the tropical savannah, Gulf country and arid outback of inland and western Queensland.

The route runs between Mt Isa and Cairns, taking in Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park in Waanyi country, Burketown and the Albert River, Karumba and the Gulf of Carpentaria, the renowned Cumberland Dam near Georgetown and the lava tubes of Undara Volcanic National Park. The tour runs in two directions across the 2027 dry season – Mt Isa to Cairns and in reverse in August.

The trip is built around the search for many of Australia’s iconic Gulf savannah species, including purple-crowned fairywren, mangrove robin, Carpentarian grasswren, sarus crane, white-breasted whistler, pictorella mannikin and many more, across diverse habitats from Mitchell grass plains and spinifex ranges to mangrove swamps and seasonally flooded wetlands.

From the boulder-strewn spinifex country around Mt Isa, where the Kalkadoon and Carpentarian grasswrens hold out, to the sandstone gorges of Boodjamulla, where pandanus-lined creeks open into Indarri Falls, from the mudflats at the mouth of the Norman River to the lush Atherton Tablelands above Cairns, the route traces some of Australia’s most distinct birding country. The Riversleigh fossil site and the 200,000-year-old lava tubes at Undara add a deep-time chapter to a journey already shaped by water, fire and time.

Note for August departure
The August departure (2 – 12 August 2027) runs the same itinerary in the opposite direction – starting in Cairns and finishing in Mt Isa. The activities, accommodation and target species are the same; only the order changes. View the reverse itinerary here.

Who is this tour for?

This tour is designed for keen birders and naturalists with a focused interest in Australia's tropical north and Gulf country. The schedule includes early starts most mornings, extended driving days on rough roads between birding hotspots and time spent quietly watching and listening in heat, dust and the demands of the dry season. Travellers should be comfortable on uneven ground and in a remote outback environment, and happy to invest time at a single site for the chance to see a difficult species.
