Whether you are a novice or an experienced photographer, this tour is for everyone who loves photography and who wants to improve their photography skills.

Flinders Island is an incredibly special place located just off the northeast coast of Tasmania. The island consists of ancient rock formations, stunning beaches, beautiful flora and fauna and incredible sunrise and sunset opportunities. Our trip consists of exploring fully the island from top to toe. Every day will be an adventure of photography on this beautiful island, from stunning rock formations to breathtaking views from high up across the mountains of the island.

As a photographer, this region offers some of the best scenery available in Tasmania – it’s like a mini-Tassie on one island, and a diversity of landscapes to capture like nowhere else in Australia.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival on Flinders Island and first photography tuition

After landing at Flinders Island Airport we will welcome you and the other guests before we begin our short drive to our accommodation for the time on the island, Mountain Seas Lodge. Mountain Seas Lodge is located just a stone's throw from the foot of Mt. Strzelecki and the coastline. A perfect location to retire each day before we head out for our daily photography adventures. After checking in and getting familiar with our accommodation, we will pack the camera gear into our mini-bus and head out for our first session. We will head down the road to Fortheringate Beach to capture the late afternoon rays as they bathe the granite cliffs of Mt Strzelecki and the lichen rich coastline. We will get a good understanding of how you capture your images, what settings you normally use and how you look to compose your images. This is a great time to blow the cobwebs out and a good chance for us to know where you are in your photography journey, allowing a tailored approach to our tuition to your level for the remainder of the trip. As the sun drops on our first day, we will capture wonderful colours and detail along the coastline with the stunning Mt Strzelecki creating the perfect backdrop before we return to dinner which will be served back at Mountains Seas where we can continue to get to know each other and discuss what we would like to gain from this photography masterclass.

Day 2

Walkers Lookout - North East River Inlet - Wombats at Palana - Killiecrankie

Our day will begin early with a breathtaking sunrise shoot from atop the Walkers Lookout, high above the coastlines of Flinders Island. As the sun rises from over the Tasman Sea, we will capture beautiful fields below to the East and images of the morning light capturing the Darling Ranges, with Mt Strzelecki in the far background to the South. A beautiful sight to see. After a hearty breakfast at Mountain Seas we will head out again, this time we will head further north up the island to another wonderful location, the North East River Inlet. Here you will capture beautiful coastal scenes with large lichen covered granite boulders, vibrant waters and plenty of bird life that calls this location home each day. This location also offers some very nice abstract photography opportunities with sand patterns, shells and other great topics. After a packed lunch we will look to head further north to the township of Palana where if lucky, we will capture our furry little wombat mates wandering the green fields of Palana. Our afternoon will be spent exploring Palana Beach and its surroundings with more great photo opportunities, including some WW2 communication bunker relics that were stationed on the island during the war. The day will end with our sunset session at the tiny coastal township of Killiecrankie. Known for its rugged coastline and dramatic views, the sun will bath over Mt Killiecrankie as we capture the seas crashing into the coast below. From Killiecrankie we will return to Mountain Seas for a well-earned dinner and put our feet up to end the day.

Day 3

Birding Wildlife & Astrophotography

Day three will commence with another stunning sunrise location, Sawyers Bay. This location has arguably the best lichen rocks on the island which makes for a brilliant location to see the early morning light rise. Rock patterns, vibrant colours and the backdrop of the island’s mountain make this a very enjoyable sunrise spot – perfect! After sunrise, we will get our feed of breakfast back at Mountain Seas before we head out for the day to explore more of this island paradise. Today will see us travel to the east coast of the island to visit the wetlands and inlets of the island. Cameron’s Inlet is a great place to start with loads of amazing birds and wildlife on display. From Cape Barron Geese to soaring Sea Eagles, the island is plentiful of birdlife to capture. We will discuss the requirements of capturing birds and wildlife in this session, and if available we will get use of our longer tele-photo lenses to photograph this eastern side of the island. After we visit the east side of the island, including enjoying our packed lunch, we will head back to the west side of the island to our sunset location. Lillie’s Beach is one of our favourite locations on the island. The remains of an old jetty with the mountains as a backdrop make this a superb sunset location as the late light sprinkles over the water and mountains, as we use the character of the old jetty to create an iconic image of Flinders Island. After sunset, we head back to Mountain Seas for another delicious dinner and relaxing. If the skies are clear, and the group is keen we will head back out locally to capture the Milky Way and host our astrophotography session. Flinders Island has some of the clearest skies in Australia with minimum to no light pollution, making this location ideal for stars and cameras.

Day 4

Whitemark - Mt Strzelecki - Castle Rock

Another day and another perfect opportunity to capture a brilliant sunrise on Flinders Island. This morning, we will head to the main township of Whitemark and set up to capture the sunrise and filter across the green and yellow fields of the island. Endless fields will be backed up with stunning views of Mt Strzelecki as the sun rises. If we get lucky, we may also get a visit from the local black swans in their little waterway home to help create more great images of the island. After sunrise we will travel back to Mountain Seas for breakfast and refresh before we head out to spend the day exploring another region of the island. Our day will consist of exploring some of the lesser-visited regions, experiencing and paying respect to the indigenous history of the island as we visit the Wybalenna Chapel, which hosts some tragic and historical stories. This region also has a very healthy community of island wombats which will make for some excellent images with the historic chapel as a backdrop. From Wybalenna Chapel we will head further north up the coast to what is regarded as the jewel of the island in terms of photographic opportunities, Castle Rock. A giant granite boulder that has placed itself right on the stunning coastline. This region has plenty of photography subjects and will be a great way to end the day as the sun drops and the colours intensify along the coast. Coastal grasses, lichened rocks and crashing seas make this a great spot. After sunset, it’s back to Mountain Seas for yet another delicious meal before we retire for the night.

Day 5

Trousers Point Sunrise Photography & Departure

Our last day on the island will commence with our final sunrise session. For the last sunrise, we like to revisit one of our favourite locations to end the tour, Trousers Point. Just a short drive from Mountain Seas, our sunrise will give us a great view of Mt Strzelecki as it towers over this secluded cove of the island. Beautiful turquoise waters fill our foregrounds as the mountain stands mighty in the background. A great way to end our photography journey here on the island. After sunrise, we will return to Mountain Seas and enjoy one last hearty breakfast before we freshen up and get ourselves packed up for check out, before returning to the Flinders Island airport to sadly leave the island, but not without a collection of stunning images from this beautiful, quiet and unique island home of the Furneaux Island Group and some amazing memories and friendships that have been created.
