About This Tour

From Day 2, this tour is led by the Australian Tour Guide of the Year 2023. 

This Cultural Tour is an exclusive, women-only experience in Broome & Cygnet Bay, Western Australia, offering a deep dive into Djugun, Bardi and Jawi culture. "Injubs" in the Bardi language signifies the special bond between mother and daughter or aunty and niece. Led by local Djugun, Bardi and Jawi women, the tour provides an immersive exploration of their rich cultural heritage and deep connection to their land and sea. Participants will experience traditional welcome ceremonies, gain access to sacred lands, and learn about the vital role of women as providers and gatherers. Activities include a boat trip to Sunday Island, dancing, oystering, fishing, crafting, bush medicine, and seasonal bush tucker, along with cultural performances and stargazing, all aimed at offering an authentic glimpse into the lives of Djugun, Bardi and Jawi women.

Itinerary

Day 1

Broome Arrival

On arrival make your own way to your hotel. The Billi Resort was affectionately called after the local Indigenous name for the coastal area of Cable Beach; Bilingurr. Located in the tourist precinct of Cable Beach, The Billi is known for its superb tropical gardens, raised timber walkways and its tranquil surroundings. In the afternoon, a driver will be waiting for you to take you to the meeting point for our first indigenous experience, a Welcome to Country. The Welcome to Country will be in Djugun language with Australian English translations, plus an introduction to Tour Guide, Pat Mamanyjun Torres, Djugun Yawuru Elder, Traditional Owner & our cultural connection to the site. The women’s only cultural immersion activities include the voicing of Djugun language words and explanations plus a Nagula-salt-water cleansing and a Djurrun-smoke blessing ceremony with ancient creation Stories of Ancestral Beings and Places at this site. The afternoon also includes continual traditional activities, and explanations of the Djugun people’s Djurrung-gu- marriage/kinship systems and the Bugarri-garra -Dreaming Histories/Herstories of this place. Delicious sovereign plant-food ‘mayi’ and ‘ngaba’ drinks and snacks are served on the beach with an opportunity to ask questions. Afterwards, a transfer driver is waiting for you to take you to Cable Beach House for Dinner (at own cost). At 7.00PM Transfer back to your hotel, Accommodation: The Billi Resort, Broome. Day 2

Broome to Cygnet Bay, Dampier Peninsula

Start your day with a delightful breakfast at your hotel, fuelling up for an adventure-filled day. Gather your gear for a scenic transfer to the meeting point of an exciting cultural experience this morning. You will be introduced to several of the ancient Bugarr-garra Dreaming stories of the Biriny-Seven Sisters Dreaming site located at Simpson / Reddell Beach and the Yinarra site at the Entrance Point which is part of an ancient songline and dreaming track along the coast that features ancient gigantic women ancestors that created the landforms in the area. You will experience a snake dance, song of protection and the local sovereign food and medicine plants found at the sites with an explanation of how these plants are used for food, medicine and technology by the Djugun people. A range of sovereign plant food and drinks will be offered to enjoy during the tour. At midday, a Transfer to Matso’s Brewery is waiting for you. Here you will meet your Bardi host and guide Rosanna for lunch. After lunch, you depart in a private coach on a scenic transfer with Rosanna and the group to Cygnet Bay (2.5 hours). On arrival check in to your accommodation for the next 3 nights at the Cygnet Bay Pearlers Village. In the evening, meet Rosanna for dinner at the Homestead Restaurant followed by a chance to discuss the coming days activities. Accommodation: Cygnet Bay Pearlers Village – Eco Safari Tent. Day 3

Cygnet Bay – Oolin Sunday Island & Pearl Farm Tour

Enjoy a great breakfast at the Homestead Restaurant. Today's activities will be dependent on tide time and weather and may be reversed. No times have been set for today's activities. Experience a half-day tour on the blue, blue waters of the Sunday Islands with Oolin Sunday Island Cultural Tours. Learn how these massive tidal currents were used by the Jawi people to hunt, fish and trade. Navigate whirlpools and eddies. Visit secluded bays, swim in crystal clear waters, learn about saltwater culture and discover the history of Sunday Island Mission. A picnic lunch will be served. You will also join a Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm tour. This tour will give you an insight into the fascinating history of pearling in Cygnet Bay and how pearls are cultivated. Cygnet Bay pearls are renowned as some of the most sought-after and beautiful pearls in the world. There will be time to go for a swim or take a walk and explore your surrounds. Time and weather permitting there may also be time for a guided walk along the shoreline, learning about the traditional way women used to hunt and fish for their families. Alternatively, Rosanna may suggest an alternate experience for the group. After dinner, join Rosanna for stargazing and storytelling. Accommodation: Cygnet Bay Pearlers Village, Eco Tents. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner provided.

Day 4

Cygnet Bay – Lullumb Experience – One Arm Point

Enjoy a hearty breakfast before joining Rosanna for a short drive to Lullumb for the Southern Cross Lullumb Experience. Bolo will welcome you to Bardi – Jawi country and guide you through a fascinating cultural journey at Lullumb, the spectacular and pristine coastal country of his ancestors. This secluded place is where Bolo shares his cultural knowledge with visitors. This relaxed journey unfolds through cultural stories, songs, hands on experiences and survival skills including hunting methods. The tour culminates with a cook up of all the bush tucker that has been collected and caught during the tour and a traditional Kimberley damper. After the tour a picnic lunch will be served, before returning to your accommodation to freshen up. We will be leaving at 3pm to One Arm Point, a laid back remote Aboriginal community north of Cygnet Bay. Rosanna will give you a personal insight into this stunning coastline with spectacular views out to the Buccaneer Archipelago. Watch in amazement as the massive tides rip past the many small islands. Learn about local Aboriginal culture and immerse yourself in their unique lifestyle. Take a tour of the hatchery and see a working aquaculture centre with a range of local art and artefacts on sale. Purchase trochus shells and jewellery which has been locally carved out of this beautiful shell, which only the local Aboriginal people are allowed to collect. Return to your accommodation late in the afternoon. Join Rosanna for a farewell dinner and the opportunity to discuss women's business further. Accommodation: Cygnet Bay Pearlers Village, Eco Tents. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner provided.

Day 5

Cygnet Bay - Broome & Farewell

GULA GOORNA LIYAN! It’s time to go back to reality. Enjoy your breakfast before your private coach transfers you back to Broome.
