About This Tour

An eight-day birding and wildlife journey through southwest Western Australia, an internationally recognised Biodiversity Hotspot. Starting and ending in Perth (Boorloo), the tour follows a loop south to Cape Leeuwin, east through the karri forests of Greater Beedelup and Walpole-Nornalup National Parks, on to the coastal heathland of Cheynes Beach, and inland via the Stirling Ranges (Koi Kyenunu-ruff) to Dryandra National Park before returning to Perth. Group size is small with two-night stays at Augusta (Tallinup) and Cheynes Beach to allow unhurried exploration.

This corner of the country is Noongar Boodja (Noongar country), bordered by the ocean to the west and south and desert to the east, cutting it off from the rest of the mainland and producing extraordinary endemism. Sixteen bird species occur only here, alongside a roster of mammals that includes numbat, quokka, honey possum and Quenda (southern brown bandicoot). Your tour is led by an experienced naturalist guide who interprets the behaviour, habitat and cultural context of each site.

From the heathland edge of the Indian Ocean at Cape Leeuwin to the towering tingle and karri of Walpole-Nornalup, from the boulder-strewn cove at Cheynes Beach to the wandoo and jarrah woodlands at Dryandra, the journey traces some of Australia's most evolutionarily distinct country. It is a tour for travellers who want to slow down, look closely, and come away with a richer sense of what makes the southwest unlike anywhere else.

Who is this tour for?

This tour is designed for birders and naturalists with a focused interest in Australia's southwestern endemics. Travellers should be comfortable with early starts, multiple stops per day, and walking on uneven coastal heathland, forest tracks and woodland trails. Some of the target species are easier heard than seen and require patience and quiet observation. The trip suits travellers who are happy to spend time at a single site in the hope of seeing a rare species, and who enjoy the company of a small group with shared interests.

Highlights

  • Bird the heathland and lighthouse grounds at Cape Leeuwin, the southwestern-most point of mainland Australia and the meeting of the Indian and Southern Oceans.
  • Walk the canopy of Walpole-Nornalup from the Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk.
  • Search the coastal heathland of Cheynes Beach for the Big 3 skulkers – noisy scrubbird, western bristlebird and western whipbird (black-throated).
  • Watch short-tail stingrays and eagle rays glide through the shallows at Hamelin Bay.
  • Look for numbats in the wandoo and jarrah woodlands of Dryandra National Park, one of the few places this termite-feeding marsupial can be seen in the wild.
  • Take in the dramatic sandstone peaks and Bluff Knoll (Bular Mial) lookouts of the Stirling Ranges (Koi Kyenunu-ruff).
  • Spotlight at Cheynes Beach for quenda (southwestern brown bandicoot), quokka and the elusive honey possum among the banksia flowers.
