Five days on Boigu Island, the closest point in Australia to Papua New Guinea, chasing red-capped flowerpecker, orange-fronted fruit-dove, Papuan (Blyth’s) hornbill and other New Guinea species you won’t find anywhere else in the country, across tidal creeks and freshwater wetlands just 6km from the PNG mainland.
No other tour within Australia puts you this close to Papua New Guinea’s birdlife. Boigu sits right at the edge of two continents’ worth of birds, with the PNG coast visible 6km across open water. You’ll go after eclectus parrot, red-capped flowerpecker, collared imperial pigeon and magnificent riflebird, all clinging to the southernmost edge of their range, then search the tidal creek systems for mangrove specialists including Great-billed heron, mangrove robin and little kingfisher. A Boigu Indigenous coordinator joins the bird guide on every departure and the creek sessions run to the tides, in the pattern the operator attributes to the Malu Kiai Rangers.
Boigu itself is a small, remarkable place: 89.6km² of freshwater swamp and samphire wetland behind a mangrove-fringed coast, rising to just 18m at its highest point, close enough to the water that the island feels like it’s barely holding its ground against the strait. Kalau Kawau Ya is spoken here, shared with the neighbouring islands of Dauan and Saibai. This part of the Torres Strait is Australia’s main crossing point for Papua New Guinea bird species and a key stopover for migratory shorebirds travelling between Australia and PNG, among them eastern curlew and great knot.
Day 1
Arrival and the Village Edge
The group meets at Cairns Airport for a briefing and to collect travel packs, then flies to Horn Island. A private charter continues the 45-minute flight to Boigu Island.
Guests are greeted with a formal Welcome to Country by the Boigu Traditional Custodians, community sign-in and a briefing on island landmarks and Ailan Kastom (Island Custom). After a welcome lunch, the first session is a village-edge walk-through targeting the eclectus parrot, singing starling and red-capped flowerpecker. The evening is a community-hosted dinner on Country, with local members sharing stories of the 'Sky Country.'
Overnight: Boigu Island. Meals: L/D.
