An 11-day birding and wildlife tour from Cairns through Queensland's tropical savannah and Gulf Country to the outback around Mount Isa.

The tour runs west, then south, across Queensland. It heads inland from Cairns over the Atherton Tablelands and the Undara volcanic fields to Georgetown. North-west along the Savannah Way to the Gulf of Carpentaria at Karumba, then west to Burketown and the Albert River. South into Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park. On to Mount Isa in Queensland’s far-west outback. Accommodation runs from a Cairns hotel through outback motels, a Gulf-front property at Karumba, a bush lodge on Lawn Hill Creek, and a Mount Isa motel, with all ground transport in a 4x4 Toyota Commuter van.

Birdwatching throughout includes mangrove and wetland species through the Gulf, giving way to arid-zone specialists by the time the tour reaches Mount Isa. The tour targets purple-crowned fairy-wren, mangrove robin and red-headed honeyeater in the mangroves at Karumba; sarus crane, brolga and Australian pratincole in the grasslands and wetlands around Normanton; and pictorella mannikin and buff-sided robin at Boodjamulla. The tour closes with its most difficult-to-spot birds, the Kalkadoon and Carpentarian grasswrens, searched for in the spinifex ranges around Mount Isa on the final two days.

Two sites add a geological and fossil dimension to the route. The Undara lava tubes, visited on Day 2, were hollowed out roughly 190,000 years ago when lava drained from a riverbed, leaving a rock shell behind. The Riversleigh fossil site, a World Heritage area reached on Day 9, holds deposits of prehistoric Australian mammal and bird fossils built up over some 25 million years.

Who is this tour for?

Keen birders and naturalists wanting the Gulf Country’s mangrove, wetland and spinifex specialists on one route, in a small group of seven. It suits travellers who are comfortable with a full outback itinerary rather than a short sampler.
