About This Tour

Imagine witnessing one of nature’s most breathtaking spectacles—the annual Red Crab spawning on Christmas Island. With Australian Geographic Travel, you can see millions of these vibrant red crabs pour out of the forest and make their way to the ocean to breed, crawling over roads, rocks, streams, and beaches in an incredible sea of red.

The migration kicks off with the wet season around November or December, but pinpointing the exact timing is tricky. The crabs’ spawning is linked to a specific moon phase and usually happens over two mornings in November, December, or even January if the rains are running late.

After soaking in this natural wonder, relax with a 3-night escape to the stunning Cocos Keeling Islands—a tropical paradise that’s perfect for unwinding. Don’t miss out on this unforgettable adventure!

Brace yourself for a surreal experience as the island comes alive with nature's magnificent display. At 5:00 am, indulge in a cooked buffet breakfast hosted at a location with a breath-taking sunrise view. Let the excitement of the Red Crab Spawning linger as you savor delicious morning delights. Around 3:30 pm, return to the hotel to refresh and reflect on the day's adventures. Revel in the unique experiences that Christmas Island has offered so far. At 6:00 pm, immerse yourself in the island's culinary scene with a delightful dinner at a local restaurant. Savour the flavours of Christmas Island as you recount the thrilling encounters of the day. Day 6

ADVENTURE AWAITS on TAKE IT EASY DAY

Start your day with a leisurely continental breakfast before diving into a day of flexible exploration. Whether it’s revisiting a missed adventure or choosing a new high- or low-impact experience, the morning is tailored to the group's interests. A light morning tea keeps you energized as you make the most of the island’s offerings. Enjoy a relaxed picnic lunch in a scenic spot before heading back to the hotel for an afternoon of rest and rejuvenation. Take a refreshing dip in The Sunset’s pool or opt for a snorkeling session at Flying Fish Cove, where crystal-clear waters invite you to explore at your own pace. As evening falls, savour a delicious meal at a local restaurant before returning to your hotel, ready for whatever the next island adventure brings.

Day 7

DOLLY & GRETA BEACHES DISCOVERY

Start the day with a relaxed continental breakfast in your room before setting off on an unforgettable journey to the remote eastern beaches of Christmas Island. The adventure begins with a 4km round-trip walk to Dolly Beach, winding through a shaded jungle trail with sections of boardwalk. If the famous red crab migration is in full swing, this walk may be significantly longer, offering an even more immersive experience in the island’s unique ecosystem. After about 40 minutes of trekking, you’ll emerge onto the island’s only white sandy beach, a secluded paradise fringed by swaying palms. Spend the morning basking in nature’s beauty—relax under the shade of the trees, observe the fascinating Robber Crabs in their natural habitat, or take a refreshing dip in the natural "spa-pool" created by the tide. Keep in mind there are no changing or toilet facilities at Dolly Beach, and snorkeling isn’t recommended in these waters. On the way back, we’ll make a stop at Greta Beach, a stunning yet fragile landscape with a steep staircase leading down to a rocky outcrop before stepping onto the sand. This beach serves as an important turtle nesting site but is also impacted by plastic waste washing ashore. As part of our visit, we’ll take a moment to collect and remove some of the debris—every little effort helps preserve this beautiful environment. With up to 1.5 hours of total walking on mostly flat but occasionally uneven and slippery terrain, comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes are essential. Don’t forget your hat, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, camera, water bottle, bathers, and a towel for this immersive nature experience. A well-earned picnic lunch awaits at The Sunset’s pool, where you can unwind and cool off in a serene setting. The afternoon is yours to relax—either by the pool or with an optional snorkeling excursion at Flying Fish Cove, where the crystal-clear waters provide a perfect backdrop for marine exploration. As the day draws to a close, gather for a special farewell dinner at a private location. Enjoy a delicious two-course meal, bring your own drinks, and make use of the provided esky and glassware as you toast to an incredible island adventure. Finally, return to the hotel, reflecting on the unforgettable experiences shared and the natural wonders discovered.

Day 8

FAREWELL TO CHRISTMAS ISLAND - WELCOME TO COCOS KEELING ISLANDS

Start your final morning on Christmas Island with a delicious cooked breakfast by the pool at The Sunset. Take some time to relax in your room and pack before checking out. Mid-morning, enjoy a leisurely township tour, stopping at Tai Jin House’s historical display, the Post Office, the Tourism Centre, and various shops for souvenirs and gifts. After a tasty lunch at a local café, we’ll collect your bags and transfer you to the airport for check-in. By late afternoon, it’s time to say goodbye to Christmas Island and hello to another paradise—the Cocos Keeling Islands! Upon arrival, friendly staff from The Breakers will greet you and escort you to your accommodation. Settle in and enjoy your first evening with a laid-back meal—either a delicious pizza at Salty’s Café with drinks at the Cocos Club or a buffet dinner at Tropika Restaurant. (*No meals are included in your Cocos Island package except for the refreshments included on the canoe tour).

Day 9

MOTORISED CANOE TOUR & OPTIONAL HOME ISLAND

Wake up to your first full day in the Cocos Keeling Islands and start with breakfast at your own pace. The nearby supermarket is perfect for grabbing supplies, or you can enjoy a cooked breakfast at Surfer Girl restaurant or a continental buffet at Tropika Restaurant. For those eager to explore, take the early ferry to Home Island for a self-guided walk through its fascinating history. Visit the local museum, wander the ‘Kampong’ village, and stroll along the foreshore to the historic Oceania House before returning to West Island. If a relaxed morning is more your style, explore the Visitor Information Centre or soak in the island’s laid-back atmosphere. In the afternoon, embark on an unforgettable canoe tour through the breathtaking Southern lagoon. Using motorized canoes, you’ll snorkel in pristine waters, hop between picturesque islands, and even catch a glimpse of the rare Christmas Island Blue-tailed skinks. Refreshments are provided, but be sure to bring a hat, sunscreen, snorkel gear, and a waterproof bag for electronics. Return to West Island in the early evening, freshen up at The Breakers, and enjoy a delicious meal at Tropika Restaurant. If you're feeling adventurous, you might try catching the ferry for a traditional Malay buffet on Home Island, though timing could be tight. End the night with drinks at the Cocos Club before unwinding after a perfect day in paradise.

Day 10

DIRECTION ISLAND DISCOVERY

Live out your castaway dreams with a full-day escape to breathtaking Direction Island! Check the ferry schedule upon arrival to confirm the Thursday departure, as it leaves early. Be sure to pack everything the night before—there are no shops or eateries, so bring all the food, drinks, and water you'll need for the day. Direction Island offers the perfect setting to unwind. Relax under swaying palms, take a dip in the crystal-clear lagoon, or explore the vibrant underwater world with your snorkel gear. For those who love history, follow the island’s marked trails to the Sydney-Emden display, where you can learn about Australia’s first naval battle. When it's time to leave, keep an eye on the ferry—it arrives quickly, and they don’t wait for stragglers! With toilet facilities and hotspot-accessible WiFi, you’ll have just enough convenience to stay comfortable while still being completely off the grid. If a day at Direction Island isn’t for you, reach out to explore other tour options for the day. Whether it’s adventure or relaxation, Cocos has something for everyone!
