About This Tour

Five days from Cairns (Gimuy) into the Atherton Tablelands and the Daintree Rainforest (Kaba Kada); Daintree River cruise, private property access for southern cassowary, Lumholtz tree-kangaroos (Mapee) at Malanda Conservation Park, platypus at Yungaburra and nocturnal spotlighting for leaf-tailed geckos and Lemuroid possums.

The tour heads inland from Cairns onto the Atherton Tablelands for three nights at Chambers Wildlife Lodge, taking in Hasties Swamp, Malanda Conservation Park (Tutamonlin), the Tolga Bat Hospital, Yungaburra and the Crater Lakes. The route then swings north through Mareeba and Julatten for a private cruise on the Daintree River, before an overnight at Cape Tribulation (Kulki) in the Daintree Rainforest (Kaba Kada) — 120,000ha of tropical rainforest, the largest in Australia — with the return to Cairns on the final day.

The tour is built around a sequence of specific wildlife encounters rather than general nature walks. In the Daintree, private property access increases the chance of encountering wild southern cassowary, the region’s endangered signature species, alongside Boyd’s forest dragon, Bennett’s tree-kangaroo, Papuan frogmouth and saltwater crocodile. On the Tablelands, platypus are reliably encountered at the mountain streams of Yungaburra, and Malanda Conservation Park offers some of the best access in Australia to Lumholtz tree-kangaroos. Optional nocturnal spotlighting adds leaf-tailed geckos, Lemuroid possums and lesser sooty owls.

Far North Queensland is the only place on earth where two UNESCO World Heritage Areas exist side by side: the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. The Wet Tropics support around 40% of Australia’s bird species and the highest diversity of rainforest mammals on the continent. Lake Eacham (Yidyam) and Lake Barrine (Barany) on the Tablelands were formed around 10,000 years ago when rising lava met groundwater and exploded; both crater lakes reach 65m deep. Hasties Swamp, the first stop on the drive up from Cairns, has recorded over 220 bird species and holds a bird hide from which brolga, sarus crane, jabiru and royal spoonbill are regularly seen.

Who is this tour for?

Who is this tour for?

This tour is designed for wildlife enthusiasts, birdwatchers and nature photographers with a genuine interest in the endemic species of Far North Queensland. Days involve multiple walks on rainforest trails, nature park paths and uneven terrain, with extended time at each site for observation and photography. The pace is wildlife-focused rather than distance-focused; expect to spend time standing quietly watching and waiting.

Highlights

 • Access private property in the Daintree Rainforest to search for wild southern cassowary (one of Australia’s most endangered birds), with private access increasing the likelihood beyond what public trails offer.
 • Join a private boat cruise on the Daintree River, with a 99% success rate for saltwater crocodile sightings, as well as great-billed heron, little kingfisher, black bittern and spectacled flying fox among the regular sightings.
 • Spend unhurried time at Yungaburra’s clear mountain streams for reliable wild platypus encounters, with no time pressure and well-suited to patient observation and photography.
 • Search for Lumholtz tree-kangaroos at Malanda Conservation Park, a small patch of protected rainforest where they are seen regularly, guided by a naturalist with local knowledge of the species’ habits and preferred trees.
 • Join optional evening nocturnal spotlighting on the Tablelands for leaf-tailed geckos, Lemuroid possums, lesser sooty owls and a diversity of frogs across the region’s most productive after-dark habitats.
 • Visit the Tolga Bat Hospital to observe the community conservation program that rescues and rehabilitates bats through hands-on care, advocacy and research.
 • Bird the hide at Hasties Swamp National Park, a large seasonal wetland with over 220 recorded species including brolga, sarus crane, jabiru and royal spoonbill.
 • Visit the Curtain Fig Tree, a strangler fig whose fallen host tree left an extraordinary curtain of aerial roots now several metres long, surrounded by some of the best birdlife on the Tablelands.
 • Four nights’ accommodation (one night at Heritage Lodge, Cape Tribulation; three nights at Chambers Wildlife Lodge, Atherton Tablelands).
 • Meals: four breakfasts, five lunches and four dinners.
 • All ground transport throughout the tour.
 • Wildlife Cruise on the Daintree River.
 • Access to Tolga Bat Hospital.
 • National Park fees, permits and ferry crossings.
 • Australian Geographic Society conservation contribution.

Day 1

Cairns to Atherton Tablelands

Cairns to Atherton Tablelands

Pickup from your Cairns hotel is followed by the drive up onto the Atherton Tablelands via the Gillies Highway, climbing past Lake Eacham (Yidyam) and Yungaburra. First stop is the Curtain Fig Tree, a strangler fig whose aerial roots run several metres down to the ground after the host tree it grew around fell against its neighbour. From there the road continues to Mount Hypipamee National Park, where a volcanic pipe almost 70 m across drops to a lake 58 m below the rim and more than 70 m deep. Lunch is in Malanda, then the afternoon is spent at Hasties Swamp, a seasonal wetland where more than 220 bird species have been recorded. A two-storey hide looks out over the water, with magpie goose, black swan, darter, brolga, sarus crane and black-necked stork among the regulars, and forest kingfisher and red-backed fairy-wren in the surrounding scrub.

Overnight: Chambers Wildlife Lodge, Lake Eacham (Yidyam). Meals: L/D.
